Parents of children, teens, and young adults who identify as LGBTQ:
Do you have a child or teen who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or is questioning?
With greater access to resources, more LGBTQ youth are coming out (sharing their gay or transgender identity with friends, family, and other adults) during adolescence. Family members, teachers, and healthcare providers need accurate information about sexual orientation and gender identity to help provide support for LGBTQ teens.
I offer training and education for parents, family members, teachers and other adults who want to better support the LGBTQ youth in their life. Whether your loved one just came out of the closet, is still tucked inside, or if you think your child may be queer but has not yet had “the talk” this workshop is for you.
Part presentation and part discussion, this workshop provides education on multiple issues facing LGBTQ teens and young adults today:
- Exposing myths about LGBTQ culture
- Education about health and culture
- Preventing risk by increasing family acceptance
- Importance of family support to promote health and well-being
- Understanding the layers of social stigma
- Resources and support for LGBTQ youth
- Q & A regarding difficult or “taboo” topics
Family support is critical for wellness and risk prevention for LGBTQ children and youth. With education about common issues facing LGBTQ teens, you can have a significant impact that exceeds beyond individual youth and their families.
“One of the most important things we are learning about suicide prevention is the critical role of connectedness. Connectedness helps these young people understand that they are valued, that someone cares about them, and that they are not alone.” -Ryan, C. (2014). Generating a revolution in prevention, wellness & care for LGBTQ children & youth.
